Overview:

Robin Stein, a stay-at-home mom, had a 6-month-old baby to carry around and the aching back to prove it.  When she could not find a baby carrier that fit or looked how she wanted, Robin started to sketch ideas for a carrier that rested the child on the hip.

Having previously worked in product development and merchandising, Robin decided that it was time to create a more comfortable and perhaps profitable baby carrier.

After looking for people who knew how to sew structured handbags and work with leather, she then spent the more than a year making prototypes.  The final product, the PortaMEe, caught the attention of people who saw her use it in public.

While Gilbert was not a sales person, she did find a business partner who was strong in sales and in a short time counted with an enviable list of clients that included Bergdorf Goodman, Best & Co., Giggle, Neiman Marcus,Takashimaya and Pottery Barn Kids.

The company’s marketing strategy is aimed at high-end stores and their prices are geared to get top dollar for its products.  So far the once stay at home mom has cornered the high-style baby carrier market and is looking at $600,000 in annual sales (http://www.portamee.com/)
