Overview:

Recycling and trying to be more environmentally conscious are social trends that have continued to grow in recent years.  With the green wave behind them, companies like the San Francisco based BedBusters (www.bedbusters.com) have started cashing in on all types of eco-friendly business ideas.

In the case of Bedbuster, their entrepreneurial spirit took them to concentrate on recycling old, unwanted mattresses and charge what could be considered a reasonable fee for their services.

For $48 - $146 or more, the company will happily take away your mattress.  After it is transported to a dismantling facility, the mattress is sliced apart to separate the foam and cotton fiber from the steel and wood frame.  The materials are then recycled to create new products like Carpet padding made of chopped up multi colored foam.

The company does not seem to be in other markets currently, but the idea could easily be applied to other areas of the country.  After all, an incredibly large number of unwanted mattresses end up in landfills every year.  The International Sleep Products Association reports that in the Duluth region of Minnesota alone, more than 63,000 mattresses are dumped in landfills annually.

In some places landfills no longer accept mattresses or may resort to high fees to allows new drop offs.  In other words, entrepreneurs have an opportunity to cash in on a recyclable product that may otherwise end up with no use at all.
