After seeing how interested her friends were in personalizing their MySpace backgrounds, 14 year old Ashley Qualls began creating and giving away background designs through Whateverlife.com.

The now 17 year old has seen her little gesture of good will grow into a business that grosses more than $1 million a year. Ashley became interested in graphic design at the same time that online social networking began to grow in popularity.

While creating and making available more than 3,000 designs, Ashley's site gained so much acceptance by her target market that it started receiving more than one million visitors a day.

As the site's colorful and whimsical designs (many with lots of hearts and quotes from popular songs) gained traction, advertisers took notice. Ashley's first check was for $2,700. The next was for $5,000, and the third for $10,000.

To help manage and grow her business, Ashley hired her mom and three teenage friends. The web entrepreneur also moved her operation from her mom's one bedroom apartment, which she shared with her mom and sister, to a more comfortable 4 bedroom house.
