The creators of Shoeboxed.com, a North Carolina startup, are looking to capitalize on the fact that most of us receive hundreds of emailed receipts yearly.

The company promises to safely store people’s receipts and allows anyone to sign up for the free service.  Once enrolled, users receive an email address which they can give to merchants when buying online.

The receipts not only go to their Shoeboxed mailbox, but they also can  be organized by creating virtual shoeboxes.

To make matters more interesting for offline shoppers, the company added a feature that allows users to scan in paper receipts for storage on the site.

Shoeboxed’s founders hope to eventually get 11 million online shoppers to enroll in the service.  Part of the monetizing strategy is to sell advertising space as more users sign up. The company may also offer a premium service at some point.
